In januari 2015 verscheen het visiedocument van de KNAW ‘Biobrandstof en hout als energiebronnen’. Ik was daarvan de eerste auteur. Sommige critici vroegen zich af: ‘wat weet die man van energie?’ Begrijpelijk voor wie mij alleen kent als voedingsexpert, maar energie-omzettingen in moleculen en cellen is het enige wetenschapsgebied waar ik echt voor heb doorgeleerd. Ik heb er de eerste zes jaar van mijn wetenschappelijke carriere aan besteed.
Mijn kennis van energieomzettingen kwam goed van pas toen ik in 2006 terugkeerde naar het energieonderzoek, maar nu bij mensen. De omzetting van energie uit voedsel in overgewicht bij de mens is natuurkundig en biologisch zeer uitdagend om te begrijpen. Als je daar eenmaal vat op hebt is biobrandstof niet heel moeilijk meer.
